Call for Village Referendum (Vote) on Downtown Buffalo Grove Plan

Whereas: The Buffalo Grove Village Board of Trustees is exploring a potential sale of 65 acres of Village property, including half of the Buffalo Grove Golf Course and the municipal campus, to a private for-profit Downtown Buffalo Grove Complex managed by CRM Properties Group.

Whereas: The proposed Downtown Buffalo Grove Plan calls for the demolition and relocation of the Buffalo Grove Village Hall and Municipal Campus.

Whereas: Citizens of Buffalo Grove are concerned about the fiscal cost to taxpayers, the environmental impact, and potential detrimental effects on the quality of life that such a project would pose on Buffalo Grove residents.

I think that the Village is afraid to put this to a vote, because they already know what the out come would be. We have enough shopping centers with low occupancy. The Town Center (which the taxpayers helped pay for), is one of them. Our police station and city hall are relatively new – a lot “younger” than my house. THERE IS NO NEED TO BUILD ON THE GOLF COURSE. IT IS A FLOOD PLAIN, AND AS I SAID BEFORE, WE HAVE OUR SHARE OF EMPTY STORES IN THE VILLAGE. To quote a commercial, “Can you hear me now?” Or, does it take circulating petitions to remove people from office to get their attention?

You could not be more accurate with your comments. Town Center has been an abject failure. It has had a high vacancy rate throughout it’s existence. Buffalo Grove does not need another strip center to cannibalize the already under utilized retail locations in town.

Further, Town Center was not successful because people do not want to spend their time strolling through an asphalt parking lot at the intersection of two major thoroughfares. Plopping another strip mall alongside Lake Cook Road will only create another failure. Why don’t our elected officials recognize this? The local towns – Arlington Heights, Mount Prospect, Palatine – that have thriving downtowns are successful because they are centered around a train station. Wheeling is attempting to do the same thing. Buffalo Grove should do nothing until it sees the success or failure of Wheeling’s efforts.

We also need to weigh the value of having a large green space, Buffalo Grove golf course, in the middle of the Village. I, along with many others, would prefer to keep that land as it is currently used.

We already have an official in the White House who does what he darn well pleases. We certainly don’t need another official at a local level pushing legislation down our throats that we don’t want or need. As others have pointed out, what purpose will it serve to create more empty commercial space? Isn’t the traffic in the area already bad enough? “If you build it, they will come.” I think the economy of the last 6 or 7 years has proved that statement to be FALSE.
